Unit converter
Convert length and volume between metric and US/imperial units, either direction — meters to miles, liters to gallons, and more.

How this calculation works
Every unit is first converted to a common base (meters for length, liters for volume) by multiplying by its size relative to that base, then converted to the target unit by dividing by the target's size. That's why, for example, kilometers use a factor of 1000 and miles use 1609.344 — both are expressed in “how many base units fit in one of this unit”.
Tips
Mil is a Swedish unit, not a typo
In Sweden, “mil” means 10 kilometers, not the English mile (1.609 km) — the two are easy to mix up, so this converter lists them as separate units.
US and UK gallons differ
A US gallon (3.785 L) is smaller than a UK/imperial gallon (4.546 L) — pick the right one for your recipe, fuel figure or tank size.
Quick estimates in your head
1 mile is roughly 1.6 km, 1 US gallon is roughly 3.8 litres and 1 foot is roughly 30 cm. These are good enough for a sanity check.
Fuel economy is different
Litres per 100 km and miles per gallon are inverse measures, not simple unit swaps. Use the Mileage calculator for those.
Pick the right kind of mile
This converter lists the Swedish mil (10 km) and the English mile (1.609 km) separately so you can't mix them up.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert in either direction?
Yes. Pick any unit as “From” and any other as “To” — for example meters to miles, or miles to meters, using the same two dropdowns.
Why is there both a Swedish mil and an English mile?
They're unrelated units that happen to share a similar name: a Swedish mil is exactly 10 km, while an English mile is about 1.609 km. Both are included so you don't have to guess which one a source means.
Does this handle weight or temperature?
Not yet — this converter currently covers length and volume only.
