How this calculation works
This uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation to estimate your basal metabolic rate (BMR) — the calories your body needs at complete rest — then multiplies it by an activity factor to estimate total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), the calories you burn including movement and exercise.
Health note: This is a general estimate for information only and is not medical or nutrition advice. Speak with a doctor or registered dietitian before making major changes to your diet.
Tips
This is an estimate, not a lab measurement
Individual metabolism varies; use the result as a starting point and adjust based on how your weight actually changes over a few weeks.
Pick the activity level honestly
Overestimating activity is the most common reason a calorie target doesn't match real-world results.
Recalculate as your body changes
Your needs shift when your weight or activity changes. Re-run the calculator every few weeks instead of relying on an old figure.
Individuals differ
The formula is a well-tested average, but real metabolism can differ noticeably between two people of the same size and age.
Change gradually
Large sudden changes in intake are hard to sustain. A doctor or registered dietitian can help you set a safe target for your situation.
Frequently asked questions
What is TDEE?
Total Daily Energy Expenditure — an estimate of all the calories you burn in a day, including your activity level, not just resting metabolism.
Should I eat exactly this many calories?
This figure is your estimated maintenance level. Weight loss or gain targets typically adjust from this baseline, ideally with guidance from a doctor or registered dietitian.
Is this medical or dietary advice?
No, it's a general estimate for information purposes only. Speak with a healthcare professional for personalised guidance.
