How this calculation works

The tip amount is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage. The total is the bill plus that tip. When splitting between more than one person, both the total and the tip are divided evenly across everyone.

Worked example

A $64 bill split 3 ways with an 18% tip: tip = $64 × 0.18 = $11.52, total = $75.52, so each person pays about $25.17.

Tips

Tipping norms vary by country

15–20% is common in the US; many European countries either include service in the price or expect a smaller, rounded-up tip — check local custom if you're travelling.

Check for a service charge

In several countries a service charge is already on the bill. Look before you add a tip on top.

Pre-tax or post-tax?

Many people tip on the amount before tax. Enter that figure as the bill if you prefer that approach.

Set the number of people to see each person's share of the total, tip included.

Frequently asked questions

Does this split the tip evenly even if people ordered different amounts?

Yes, this version splits both the bill and tip evenly across everyone entered. For itemized splitting by what each person ordered, you'd need to divide individual items first.
