How this calculation works

Each day's hours are the clock-out time minus the clock-in time, minus any unpaid break, converted from a 24-hour clock into decimal hours (so 30 minutes counts as 0.5 hours). The week total simply adds up every day you filled in.

Worked example

Clock in at 9:00 AM, out at 5:30 PM, with a 30-minute lunch break: 8.5 hours on the clock minus 0.5 hours break = 8.0 hours paid that day.

Tips

Leave a day blank to skip it

Days with no clock-in or clock-out are ignored, so a part-time week with only 3 working days still totals correctly.

Break minutes are subtracted, not added

Enter unpaid lunch or break time in minutes and it comes off that day's total automatically.

Overnight shifts work

If a clock-out time is earlier than the clock-in time, it is treated as the next day, so night shifts count correctly.

Payroll often uses decimal hours

7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5 hours. Multiply by the hourly rate for a quick pay estimate.

Overtime rules vary

This totals hours only. Overtime thresholds and rates depend on your country, contract and local law.

Frequently asked questions

Does this round to the nearest quarter hour?

No, it calculates exact decimal hours. Some employers round punches to the nearest 15 minutes — adjust your clock-in/out entries first if yours does.

Can I use this for a two-week pay period?

This version covers one 7-day week. For a two-week period, run it twice and add the totals together.
