Grade calculator
Turn a raw test score into a percentage and a standard letter grade.
Fill in the fields and press Calculate to see your result here.
How this calculation works
The percentage score is correct answers ÷ total questions × 100. The letter grade uses a common US grading scale: 90%+ is A, 80–89% is B, 70–79% is C, 60–69% is D, and below 60% is F. Many schools use their own cutoffs — check your syllabus if it differs.
Worked example
You answer 42 out of 50 questions correctly: 42 ÷ 50 = 0.84 = 84%, which falls in the 80–89% range — a B on the standard scale.
Tips
Grading scales vary by school
Some schools use a stricter or looser scale (for example, 93%+ for an A) — treat the letter shown here as a common default, not a universal standard.
This is a simple percentage
It divides correct answers by the total. For weighted categories such as homework and exams, calculate each category first.
Letter cut-offs
Letters use the common 90/80/70/60 boundaries and don't show plus or minus grades.
Plan a final exam
Try different numbers of correct answers to see how many questions you can miss and still reach a target grade.
Frequently asked questions
Can I enter how many I got wrong instead of right?
Enter total questions and correct answers; if you only know how many you missed, subtract that from the total first to get correct answers.
Does it round the percentage?
The percentage is shown to one decimal place, but the letter grade is based on the exact, unrounded value, so a score right on a cut-off (like 89.6%) is graded correctly rather than rounded up first.
What if my course uses weighted categories instead of a flat percentage?
This calculator handles a single test or assignment's raw score. For a whole course made up of weighted categories (homework, tests, final exam), the GPA calculator's weighted approach is closer to what you need.
